28 April 2024, National Occupational Health and Safety Day. 'National Occupational Health and Safety Day' is being celebrated in Bangladesh on April 28 since 2016 to raise awareness to ensure a decent work environment in all workplaces to implement the vision of sustainable development and smart Bangladesh. This year's theme of the day is 'Healthy workers, good working environment; Will build a smart Bangladesh'. National Occupational Health and Safety Day was celebrated in Cox's Bazar through various programs including colorful rally, discussion meeting.
On this occasion, Mr. Shah Mofakhkharul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Cox's Bazar Factory and Institution Inspection Department, presented the purpose and main speech of the day in a PowerPoint presentation at the conference room of Cox's Bazar District Commissioner on Sunday (April 28) morning. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mr. Vibhishan Kanti Das was present as special guest. Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Mr. Muhammad Shaheen Imran presided over the event.
Dr. Imrul Kayes, Medical Officer of Cox's Bazar Civil Surgeon Office, Mr. Mohammad Jahed Chowdhury, Station Officer of District Fire Service Defense Directorate, Shafiullah Ansari, President of Cox's Bazar District Jatiya Sramik League, along with representatives of Hotel Owners' Association, officials of various hotels, various workers' associations were also present in the meeting. Leaders, non-governmental NGOs and workers from various sectors.
After the power point presentation of Mr. Shah Mofakhkharul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Inspectorate of Factories and Institutions of Cox's Bazar district, the speakers had a free discussion.
The speakers said that the occupational health and safety of the workers in the workplace is closely related to the increase in productivity. Awareness should be created among employers, workers and general public about healthy and hygienic working environment. All factories must use modern technology.
The Deputy Commissioner said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has struggled throughout his life to establish the rights and dignity of working people. The country is moving forward under the leadership of the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Keeping Bangabandhu's principles and ideals in front, the present government is working sincerely to improve the quality of life of the working people. Investing in workplace safety is an owner's best investment.
In the discussion, he requested everyone to work unitedly on issues such as elimination of child labour, ensuring safety in factories etc.
It may be noted that the government has constructed a National Occupational Health and Safety Research Center and Training Institute in Rajshahi to provide various trainings on occupational health and safety at work to workers and employers.
Earlier, on the occasion of the day, a colorful rally started from the office of the District Commissioner of Cox's Bazar and circled the various roads of the city and ended at the District Commissioner's office. Officials of public and private departments, workers-owners-employees and people from different classes and professions participated in the rally.
